Which is better, the Ford Bronco or the Jeep Wrangler? Today we face these two pure SUVs that are still on the market to find out which is the best option.
Pure SUVs are disappearing. Already fewer and fewer customers buy this type of vehicle, obsessed with the characteristics of SUVs and their versatility. However, some models are still marketed, a surviving minority that also has competition within its segment. Therefore, today we are going to try to answer this question: which is better, the Ford Bronco or the Jeep Wrangler?
To deal with them, we will turn to one of our technical comparisons, where we will analyze aspects such as dimensions, the load capacity of the trunk, the engines, its off-road capacity and prices. In the end, we will draw some conclusions that will help you better know which is the best option.
The new Ford Bronco, recently unveiled after more than two decades of inactivity, has returned as one of the benchmark SUVs in its segment, straight into the heart of its rival in this technical comparison. At the moment it will not be marketed in Europe, but in the United States it is already available for order before it lands in dealerships in the spring of 2021.
How big is? Ford 4x4 dimensions vary based on body option selected. If we choose the two-door version, we are looking at a vehicle with 4,412 mm in length, 1,927 mm in width and 1,826 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,550 mm. If, on the contrary, we choose the four-door option, the length increases to 4,810 m, the height to 1,852 mm and the wheelbase to 2,949 mm, with a similar width. At the moment the volumetric capacity of its trunk has not been disclosed.
The powertrains available in the new Bronco are two gasoline engines. The first is a 2.3 EcoBoost turbo petrol unit that delivers 270 hp of power and 420 Nm of torque, available with both a seven-speed manual transmission and a ten-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the 2.7-liter V6 engine delivers 310 hp of power and 542 Nm of torque. It is only available with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Both include a permanent all-wheel drive system.
When it comes to off-road heights, the Bronco offers a 29-degree angle of attack and 37.2-degree departure angle, as well as a 294mm ground clearance and a wading capacity of 851mm. These heights are possible thanks to the optional 35-inch tires, being significantly reduced with the original wheels. As for prices, it is available from 26,436 euros in the United States.
In the other corner of the ring we find the Jeep Wrangler, a model that was completely renewed in 2018 and that, unlike the new Bronco, is marketed in both the United States and Europe thanks to the reach of the FCA Group. This model is also available with both a three- and five-door bodywork and is the main rival for Ford to beat with its new 4x4.
If we start with the dimensions, the three-door Wrangler offers 4,334 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width and 1,858 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,459 mm. By contrast, the five-door Jeep raises its length to 4,882mm, its height to 1,881mm and its wheelbase to 3,008mm. The width remains unchanged. Meanwhile, the boot has a volumetric capacity of 192 liters in the three-door version, and 548 liters in the five-door.
In the engine section, we find both gasoline and diesel engines. The first ones are the 2.0 turbo with 270 hp and 400 Nm of torque, available only with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All the lighting system of Jeep cj, jk and jl can be upgraded to Jeep Wrangler led headlights. Meanwhile, the diesel is the 2.2 CRD four-cylinder and 200 hp, also available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the United States, a version with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 hp of power is also marketed.
As for the off-road dimensions, the three-door version has a 35.2-degree angle of attack, a belly angle of 29.2 degrees and a departure angle of 29.2 degrees. On the other hand, the five-door version features an angle of attack of 34.8 degrees, a ventral angle of 29.9 degrees, and a departure angle of 19.2 degrees. Prices start at € 51,100 for the three-door version, and € 55,100 for the five-door. In the United States it starts from 23,710 euros.
As you have seen, there are important differences between the two 4x4s. The Ford Bronco is slightly larger in its three-door version, but the Jeep Wrangler is somewhat larger in the five-door version. There are also differences in terms of powertrains, as the Bronco is only available with gasoline engines and the Wrangler offers diesel engines as well. Off-road benchmarks are slightly better on the Jeep, as are prices in the United States. We'll have to wait to find out all the details of the Bronco when it lands in dealerships next year.
