Upgrading the headlights on your 2004 GMC Sierra—whether to modern LED units, projector assemblies, or even just fresh halogen housings—is a fantastic way to improve nighttime visibility and refresh the truck's front-end appearance . However, one critical step is often overlooked: aiming your new headlights correctly.

Even the most expensive, high-tech headlights are dangerous if they point at the sky, blinding oncoming traffic, or at the ground, failing to illuminate the road ahead. Fortunately, aiming the headlights on your GMT800 Sierra is a straightforward process you can complete at home with basic tools and about 30 minutes.

Why Aiming is Non-Negotiable

If you have ever driven toward a truck with aftermarket LEDs that seemed brighter than the sun, you have experienced misaligned headlights. When you upgrade your 2004 GMC Sierra headlights, the new housing may sit slightly differently in the mounting brackets, or the bulb’s filament/emitter position might differ from the factory originals .

According to the official GMC owner’s manual for this generation of Sierra, the most common sign that your headlights need adjustment is when oncoming drivers frequently flash their high beams at you . This indicates your low beams are aimed too high and shining directly into their eyes.

Preparation: Setting the Stage

Before you turn a single screw, you need to set up your truck properly. If you skip this, your measurements will be inaccurate.

Find a Wall and Level Ground: Park your Sierra on a level surface facing a light-colored wall or garage door. You need exactly 25 feet (7.6 meters) of space between the headlight lenses and the wall .

Set the Load: Your truck’s stance affects the beam angle. Ensure the tires are properly inflated. For the most accurate reading, the vehicle should have a full tank of gas and roughly 160 lbs (75 kg) in the driver's seat (or simulate this weight) .

Prep the Truck: Remove any snow, mud, or debris from the headlights. Roll the truck forward and backward a few feet to settle the suspension.

The "Aim Dot" Method (The Official Way)

While some generic guides tell you to guess the center of the beam, the 2004 Sierra has a specific feature to make this easy: the Aim Dot.

Measure the Height: Open the hood and look at the plastic lens of your low-beam headlight. You will see a small circular molded mark—this is the "aim dot." Measure the distance from the ground to the center of this dot. Write this number down .

Mark the Wall: Go to the wall and measure up from the ground to the exact same height as your aim dot. Use painter's tape to create a horizontal line across the wall at this height. Make it long enough to span the width of your truck .

Isolate the Beam: Turn on your low-beam headlights. To avoid confusion, cover the headlight you are not adjusting with a thick piece of cardboard or a towel. Do not use plastic or cloth covers inside the housing as the heat from the bulb could damage the lens or housing .

Locate the Adjuster: Look behind the headlight assembly near the radiator support. You will find a vertical aiming screw. On the 2004 Sierra, this typically requires an E8 Torx socket to turn, though some aftermarket housings may use a Phillips head or a 10mm hex .

Make the Adjustment: Turn the screw. As you turn it, watch the beam of light on the wall.

The Goal: The top edge of the brightest part of the beam ("cut-off line") should hit exactly at the bottom edge of the horizontal tape line you put on the wall .

The Rule: If the beam is above the line, lower it. If it is below, raise it up to the line. Never aim the beam higher than the tape line .

Once you have adjusted both the driver and passenger sides, take the truck for a test drive on a dark, straight road. The low beams should illuminate the road ahead without glaring off street signs or rear-view mirrors of cars in front of you. Taking the time to properly aim your headlights ensures you get the full performance out of your upgrade without becoming a hazard to everyone else on the road .
